Job Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Electrical Power Systems Engineer will work with a team of engineers, asset managers and operations experts to ensure wind, solar and battery energy storage facilities are operated in a safe, reliable and economic manner.
The Electrical Power Systems Engineer will manage return to service troubleshooting, performance improvement initiatives, retrofit projects, reliability improvement projects, root cause analysis and major repairs of electrical equipment in coordination with on and offsite support. In addition to working with electrical equipment in operation, the Power System Engineer will be responsible for ensuring new projects and acquisitions are operationally ready by coordinating with design and construction engineers.
Responsibilities
- Lead for all power systems technical support for operating wind, solar and battery storage projects.
- Advise on controls, SCADA, facility metering, NERC requirements, wind turbine, battery storage and solar project performance issues.
- Act as the primary power systems liaison between construction and operations on new project hand over.
- Prepare documentation and training programs to share knowledge with field engineering and operations teams.
- Establish and manage relationships with internal stakeholders, external contractors and service providers to perform inspections, troubleshooting and repair work.
- Lead efforts to troubleshoot and safely return equipment to service after forced and planned outages.
- Lead root cause analysis and remediation plans for defective equipment, including efforts to improve the design of under-performing equipment.
- Provide technical leadership in electrical system maintenance and evaluation.
- Review, manage and approve of proposed changes to power system protection equipment.
- Coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair activities to optimize safety and reliability.
- Responsible for evaluating project acquisition opportunities, with a focus on safety, reliability, cost, and energy generation.
- Evaluate asset end-of-life and repower opportunities.
- Analyze project performance of wind, solar and battery storage projects to identify and implement safety and performance improvement opportunities.
- Review emergent site issues in an effective means to aid in returning equipment to service.
Minimum Qualifications
- BSEE in power systems from an accredited university.
- 5 years of experience in electrical power systems engineering, operations, design and construction.
- Demonstrated experience with standard construction documentation review and construction monitoring, inspection and commissioning of medium and high voltage equipment.
- Experience with substation and transmission line design, construction and maintenance.
- Experience with power system analysis applications such as PSS/E, PSLF, and/or PSCAD.
- Experience reviewing and understanding events created by protection system relays, including providing guidance to field crews on causes and authorizing return to service.
- Understanding of overhead or underground collection systems.
- Familiarity with NERC and FERC requirements.
- Candidates must be available and willing to travel up to 30% of the time for periods of up to a week at a time.
- Candidates must be available for remote troubleshooting and technical support outside of normal work hours.
- Ability to understand and work within project and department budgets.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- MSEE in power systems from an accredited university.
- Direct experience in wind, solar or battery storage project system design, construction and operation.
- Experience with power purchase contracts, electric power system regulatory compliance and market structure.
- Understanding of SCADA system requirements, design, implementation and operation.
- Utility scale generation interconnection experience including process, requirements and implementation.
