Job Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Operations Engineer will work on a variety of engineering projects related to wind plant, solar plant and electrical power system performance. The Operations Engineer will manage performance improvement initiatives, retrofit projects, reliability improvement projects, root cause analysis, maintenance planning and major repairs in coordination with on and offsite support. The primary responsibilities for this position include the monitoring, remediation and reliability improvement of solar and battery storage assets along with balance of plant and substation equipment.
The day-to-day activities have a wide degree of variety involving multiple operating projects located throughout the United States.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, budget, and supervise on-site and off-site activities related to retrofit and repair of the company's energy projects.
- Facilitate communication and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to construction, development, asset management and engineering-related activities.
- Coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment as needed.
- Evaluate asset performance, report on and recommend design or operational modifications. Make clear concise recommendations taking considerations of performance, timing, capital expenditures, and budgeting.
- Lead the root cause analysis and remediation plans for defective equipment, enhance the design of problematic parts to improve performance and reliability.
- Evaluate wind and solar asset acquisitions, focusing on future reliability, costs, and energy generation.
- Evaluate wind and solar asset end-of-life extension and repower opportunities.
- Maintain and grow the wind and solar asset reliability program.
- Establish and manage relationships with service providers to perform repair work. Ensure relevant standards are implemented for the successful return to service of repaired units in accordance with design and supplier standards.
- Plan, prepare, and instruct training programs as required to share field engineering and/or product knowledge with operations staff.
- Perform administrative functions, such as writing technical and/or job status reports, requesting quotes, ordering materials and services, preparing time and expense sheets in a thorough and timely manner.
- Conduct work actions in compliance with industry standards for safety, quality, and environmental protection. Utilize technical expertise to enhance Longroad Energy’s culture of safety.
- Research and analyze design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
- Travel to operating sites within the United States. Expected annual travel of 25-35%.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or comparable engineering experience.
- 3 years’ experience in renewable energy or power generation.
- Experience with renewable energy vendors and independent service providers.
- Experience with common spreadsheet and word processing systems.
- Experience in Python, SQL, reliability analysis, data analysis and computer-aided design software.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical details.
- The ability to perform essential physical functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation; this includes climbing 300’ wind turbines, lifting 50 lbs. above head, and meeting the weight requirement of safety gear, 310 lbs. or less.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to qualify for DOT certification.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in wind, solar or power generation industry.
- Industrial battery system and/or solar experience.
