Job Purpose
Reporting to the Performance Engineer, the Data & Performance Engineer will have the goal of maximizing project performance and as such, will work on a variety of tasks related to monitoring, calculating, and reporting on solar, battery and wind project performance metrics. Primary responsibilities will include development and implementation of performance analytics, database and code base and quantifying differences between modeled and actual project performance.
The Data & Performance Engineer will coordinate information sharing between Engineering and other departments and will be a key team member to identify and correct operational and financial issues at multiple projects located throughout the United States.
Responsibilities & Tasks:
- Use SQL, Python, or other programming languages to calculate key performance indicators requested by asset management and operations management. Examples of KPIs include total energy generated over time, distribution of fault codes by wind turbine, etc.
- Maintain and optimize a daily data pipeline in a serverless cloud environment. Create new data pipelines as needed.
- Prepare data for monthly operating reports, including manual corrections as needed, and review with asset managers and operations managers.
- Use Python and other programming tools to create or improve automated data quality checks and data cleaning. Work with asset managers, operations managers, and SCADA/IT team on planning improvements to site equipment or software.
- Develop new performance KPIs and report visualizations.
- Support onboarding of new operating projects by collecting metadata, reviewing performance metric reporting requirements, creating daily and monthly operating report templates, and verifying data after the project is online.
- Verify annual planned performance metrics against budgets, design models, financial models, and actual performance.
- Improve data lake quality by backfilling historical data, cross-checking reported data, removing unused sets of data, and adding documentation.
- Implement and improve code review and change management processes.
- Create or improve anomaly detection tools, such as identifying outlier wind turbine anemometer data, outlier wind turbine pitch angle, etc.
- Occasional travel (5%) to operating wind and solar projects, and optionally offices if working remotely.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, or Statistics, Computer Science preferred, or comparable engineering experience.
- Experience using Python (or similar high-level language) for data analysis.
- Experience using SQL.
- Experience with Amazon Web Services or similar cloud environment, Git, and database management.
- Ability to clearly document code.
- Experience with common spreadsheet and word processing systems.
- Interest in renewable energy industry.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in wind, solar, and/or power transmission industries.
- Experience with renewable energy financial agreements and wholesale power market pricing.
- Experience using and developing machine learning models.
