SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTOR - SPANISH

Position Summary
MAJOR DUTIES
- In collaboration with content area faculty, develop and deliver contextualized SI sessions that reinforce key concepts and information as well as support student achievement and success.
- Design SI experiences (projects, discussions, scenarios, etc.) and evaluation measures (quizzes, tests, etc.) that facilitate student learning outcomes and provide feedback to the SI team (faculty, tutor director, etc.).
- Coach students concerning academic achievement and learning goals (course content, requirements, grading procedures, attendance policy, etc.) and instruct students on best-practice study skills to empower student success.
- Create and maintain learning/study materials for students i.e. manipulatives, worksheets, study summaries, learning games, etc.
- Support and assess students’ progress. develop success plans with SI team members (faculty, tutor director, etc.).
- Attend trainings with SI team members (faculty, tutor director, grant director, etc.) to determine SI programming (content, days, and hours) and collaborate on ways to innovate SI sessions.
- Use of the college’s learning management system (CANVAS) and other software platforms as needed.
- Work closely with the faculty and Tutoring Center staff to help generate reports on impact of supplemental instruction on student success rates in given disciplines.
- Perform related duties similar to Adjunct Faculty.
- Other duties as assigned by Tutoring Center Director and the content area faculty.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Familiar with course content. SI session development principles, and SI session scheduling/planning.
- Familiar with current teaching methodologies and practices in collaboration with the lead instructor.
- Familiar with learning outcomes and assessment principles and skilled in session delivery and student evaluation.
- Knowledge of how to create learning/study materials for students.
- Skilled in collaboration, problem solving, time management, and critical thinking to promote student success.
- Skill in the operation of computers, job-related software, and preparation of reports.
- Must possess strong verbal and written communication, organizational skills, and maintain the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse group of students and stakeholders.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Director of Tutoring in collaboration with the lead instructor assigns work related to the specific course content and in alignment with the college’s student success initiatives. The supervisor spot-checks completed work and reviews programming for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include all Federal, State, and local laws; statues, policies, and procedures; as well as San Juan College security policies, FERPA industry best practices, social media guidelines, and College and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related instructional duties. The variety of tasks, knowledge and abilities required to perform this work contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to supplement content in high-risk courses to improve student success and completion.
- Success in this position contributes to the successful provision of educational opportunities for college students.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other College personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and distinguishes between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed in an office or classroom setting.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent college credits in Spanish or related fields is required. Must possess Spanish Language fluency.
- Experience sufficient enough to thoroughly understand the objectives of the discipline they are supporting.
- Minimum of one year experience providing student academic support services, preferably at the college level.
- Familiar with utilizing a learning management system and/or creating web-based instructional and supplemental materials preferred.
- Demonstrates experience working with diverse populations.
- Prior teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred.
- Ability to work at multiple sites (face to face and online) and on weekends and evenings.
