Job Description:
NATURE OF WORK
This is a senior level position in the City’s Occupational Health program providing nursing services in the Health Maintenance, Wellness, and Medical Examination programs for City employees and retirees.

Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of overall departmental responsibility and from lower classes by its more lead/administrative responsibilities and limited supervisory responsibilities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK**
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Plans, organizes, and implements operations of Employee Heath Service and recommends operating procedures.
Takes a leadership role with respect to members of nursing staff providing primary health services to employees and retirees, including health assessments, screening, clinics and the management of selected medical problems.
Coordinates referral process for physicals and occupational injuries, initiates and alters therapies for uncomplicated injuries and illnesses.
Serves as primary medical staff to Disability Review Committee.
Advises Managers, Supervisors and other City Officers on status of injured and ill employees and retirees when appropriate.
Performs and supervises pre-employment and employee medical examinations and medical care provided in the Health Services clinic under medical protocols and applicable nursing license(s). Participates in applicable health care field as required to maintain said license(s).
Maintains relationship and results oriented evaluation with worker’s compensation health care providers.
Maintains general control over referrals.
Recommends selection, promotion, discipline, discharge and other appropriate personnel actions.
Coordinates, advises, and makes recommendations regarding general health education and screening programs initiated through the City’s Wellness Program
Participates in associations and advisory boards
Structures, prepares, and chairs committees charged with evaluating bids for services.
Handles blood and body fluids in accordance with OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Standards.
Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May act in absence of supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in nursing and two years experience in a clinical or hospital environment. Graduation from an accredited two-year registered nurses program and four years occupational health experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the required knowledge, ability, and skills. Possession of a valid Occupational Health Certification can be substituted for two years of the required experience
Prefer Masters degree in Nursing or the ability to attain within one year of appointment.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Valid Florida Registered Nurse license.
Prefer Valid Advance Registered Nurse Practitioner license in appropriate specialty.
Prefer Certification in Occupational Health Nursing.
Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
NOTES
May be required to attend meetings outside normal business hours.
SELECTION FACTORS
Thorough knowledge of professional Nursing and Occupational Health Care programs and practices.
Thorough knowledge of applicable local state and federal ordinances, laws, and statutes related to Occupational Health standards and requirements.
Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of effective administration.
Ability to develop and administer City Employee Heath Care program
Ability to manage selected medical problems, order physical and occupational therapy, and initiate, monitor, and alter therapies for uncomplicated acute illnesses.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively with elected officials, charter officers, managers, and supervisors, representatives of other agencies, other city employees and the general public.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
Ability to work well in a close-knit team environment.
Ability to provide leadership to co-workers.
