The Scripps Howard Fund is seeking an experienced and passionate Director of Development to drive fundraising efforts and help support and grow the Fund’s unique journalism programs and programs involving childhood literacy and community support.
Supporting the Fund’s journalism programs, which involve developing programs to innovate journalism education and support future journalists, would be roughly 60 percent of the Director of Development’s role. The remaining time would be spent working with funders to grow support for the Fund’s award-winning “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign and for other projects.
The position is responsible for developing strategies to diversify funding resources and will manage activities and relationships related to donor prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising and managing a portfolio of major donors.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Develop an innovative development plan to address the growing need of our first-class programs.
Manage the unique lifecycle of donors from prospecting and cultivation through solicitation and stewardship.
Cultivate prospects and solicit donors with effective information sharing, trust building and collaboration with colleagues.
Build relationships and proposals that create opportunities to obtain major gifts.
Pursue funding from businesses, sponsors, and other foundations.
Fully understands and supports when seeking gifts to advance and enhance program goals.
In collaboration with organizational leadership, develop annual performance metrics regarding fundraising activities and financial goals.
Prioritize fundraising efforts centered around relationships, engagement, and networking.
Use donor database for donor records management and seeks continual improvement in fundraising technology to ensure the organization’s needs are met.
Represent the organization at appropriate public and private events and seek opportunities to participate in events that will enhance the Fund’s exposure and reputation.
Work collaboratively with the marketing/communications team to develop fundraising materials to distribute to current and prospective major donors, including but not limited to letters, emails, newsletters, proposals, PowerPoint presentations, and reports.
Ensure that all reports required by the leadership of the organization and Board are submitted accurately and in a timely manner.
Serve as a vital team leader by providing insight and guidance and contributing to strategy discussions across programmatic areas for the Fund.
Ensure all fundraising goals are met.
Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Bachelor’s degree
Generally, 10+ years of relevant experience in progressively responsible roles, managing fundraising or sales activities.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
Significant level of self-motivation, goal-orientation, attention to detail, and commitment to identifying, establishing and sustaining professional relationships with prospects, major donors and stakeholders.
Proven front-line fundraising experience with an emphasis on individual relationship-building skills.
Passion for the mission of the Scripps Howard Fund and Foundation.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to proactively prioritize workflow and meet deadlines.
Effective communications approach through strong listening, speak in and writing skills.
A strong desire for personal growth and the organization's growth.
Demonstrated success in developing and working with high-net-worth donors.
Familiarity with tax planning strategies for high-net-worth donors.
The position is fully remote. Travel approximately 25% including some travel to the Scripps Howard Fund office in Cincinnati is required.
