Peñasquito needs geotechnical engineering expertise for the comprehensive technical support and guidance in geotechnical engineering, ensuring the effective management of geotechnical risks and compliance with safety regulations.
The key result is to ensure effective management of geotechnical risks, compliance with safety regulations, and optimization of geotechnical engineering practices through training, guidance, support, and maintenance of geotechnical models and systems.

Here is a snapshot
- Provide technical guidance and support to site-based geotechnical engineers and technicians. Develop and deliver training programs to ensure that site personnel are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to identify and manage geotechnical risks effectively.
- Ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations and requirements related to geotechnical engineering.
- Advise the operational and technical team in completing and maintaining geotechnical risk assessments across open pit and tailing and surrounding areas.
- Support the monitoring team in designing geotechnical monitoring systems and interpretation of monitoring data.
- Advice in the design, implementation, and operation of ground and slope performance monitoring systems including critically alarmed slope stability radars, TDR, VWP
- Guide pit wall reconciliation tasks to assess achieved wall conditions and work to improve the design, planning, and execution of wall control blasting and excavation of pit walls.
- Support the data collection team, assisting in the analysis and interpretation of information to feed into the geotechnical and hydrogeological models.
- Maintain geotechnical models, e.g., rock mass, geotechnical domain, and hydrogeological models.
- Support the development of slope designs for open pit benches and waste dumps, utilizing appropriate geotechnical modelling software and methodologies.
- Support tailings dam design including foundations, embankment dam stability, hydraulic analysis, freeboard, water balance, deposition planning, groundwater analysis
- Develop and maintain the Ground Control Management Plan,
- Develop and update existing geotechnical systems and procedures to bring them into line with current practices.
- Support collaboration with internal technical and external reviews and audits
- Review and advise geotechnical designs, reports, and recommendations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist
Functional and Technical capabilities/skills
- Strong understanding of geological and geotechnical principles, including rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and hydrogeology.
- Competency in interpreting geomechanical material parameters and using pit slope design and geotechnical stability analysis software.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead multidisciplinary teams and influence decision-making processes.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and industry best practices in geotechnical engineering and mine safety
- English competency (both written and oral) is essential.
Experience required
- 15+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering across base and precious metals.
- Extensive experience in geotechnical engineering within the mining industry, with focus on open pit operations and tailing construction.
- Experience in geotechnical engineering of tailings dam
Professional Education
- Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field
- Membership of professional geological and/or mining society, such as; the International Society of Rock Mechanics, SME, SEG, IMM, AusIMM, etc.
Working Conditions and location
The position is an expat position (country/continuous) located in Peñasquito Mazapil, Zacatecas Mexico. The mine is a remote site located in a warm, semi-dessert climate.
Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace.
The rotational roster will be 4 days on site 3 off x 5 days on site 2 off.
The position may be required to travel to domestic and international sites.
