Job Summary: The Instructional Designer I assists and supports the creation robust and interactive online courses for credit and non-credit courses through technical work under general supervision. Works one-on-one with faculty member to identify course learning objectives, teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and other parameters necessary for development of basic courses.
Additional Department Summary: Works collaboratively with faculty, fellow instructional designers, and media and technical support staff to develop creative and engaging courses for online or blended delivery. Envisions and creates interactive learning activities and innovative media elements. Makes recommendations to faculty on good online instructional practices, drawing upon experience, theory, and research, that lead to the realization of the desired student learning outcomes.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and some instructional design, interactive technology, or technical support experience; OR master’s degree.
Skills and Knowledge: Strong knowledge of pedagogy, especially in the online realm. Excellent project management and time management skills. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills. Ability to understand, implement, and train others in web/new media content preparation, presentation and production. Ability to implement instructional technology tools for online content preparation, presentation and production. Ability to work with clientele and translate their instructional technology needs. Ability to thrive within a collaborative team environment to produce a quality final product within given time constraints. Ability to quickly evaluate and learn new technologies. Strong ability to envision and develop engaging online interactions to concisely convey complicated concepts to student learners. Team player that proactively embraces new challenges. Willingness to share knowledge and skills with other members of the course development team.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the Blackboard Learn learning management system (or comparable LMS) and a working knowledge of web accessibility. Experience working with faculty at an academic institution.
