Primary Purpose:
Oversees rail-inclusive site planning and the design of rail facilities promoting efficient service to new and expanding customers across a multistate territory.
Principal Duties:
- Produces practicable CAD engineering plans and cost estimates for the extension of industrial sidetracks to serve customers’ manufacturing and distribution facilities.
- Produces track schematics, operations animations, and 3D renderings to align internal and external project stakeholders on site and track development strategies.
- Produces exhibit drawings for inclusion in customer track agreements.
- Performs all aspects of a thorough site evaluation, considering environmental impacts, up- and downstream rail operations, on-site railcar handling, alternative development strategies, and future expansion potential before advising a customer on rail facility design.
- Collaborates with Norfolk Southern’s industrial development allies on rail-inclusive site planning and site marketing to industrial prospects.
- Conducts meetings with customers and engineering consultants to discuss track and site development solutions.
- Hosts discussions with Norfolk Southern’s Operations and Engineering colleagues to obtain internal approvals to provide service to new rail facilities prior to construction.
- Provides railroad engineering and operations expertise to the department and to prospective customers.
- Assists Industrial Development’s Project Management and GIS Services teams in the management of our industrial site inventory.
- Coaches and mentors Industrial Development’s Development and Planning Engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
- 3 years of experience in civil site planning, railroad engineering, or transportation engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of combined experience in civil site planning, railroad engineering, transportation engineering, or project/construction management.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Technical Skills:
Required:
- Computer-aided design (Bentley Microstation, Bentley OpenRoads, Bentley OpenSite, AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk Civil3D, etc.)
- Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Preferred:
- 3D rendering (AutoDesk 3DS Max, Bentley LumenRT)
- Data processing and analytics (ESRI ArcGIS, Alteryx)
- Adobe Creative Cloud software (Acrobat/DC, Illustrator, Photoshop, XD)
Aptitudes and Abilities
- Knowledge of transportation and land development engineering
- Knowledge of railroad track and/or roadway construction
- Written, verbal, and visual communication skills
- Poise in front of customers/clients
