Occupational Summary
Develop, coordinate and supervise research, technical, and administrative activities of the projects conducted by operation, large network or principal investigator(s) including review and supervise activities performed by subordinates in the collection, compilation, documentation and analysis of research data.
Work Performed
Budget, Finance, and Procurement: 25%
- Assists the Administrative Director with management of DMPI’s operating budget, by developing and managing a sub-budget specifically designated for overall lab operations.
- Performs monthly reconciliations and reports monthly projections on the DMPI operations lab budget and Molecular Genomics Core (MGC).
- Manage CoreResearch@Duke for the Genomics group, including billing and providing permissions.
- Performs monthly billing for lab gases and biohazard waste associated with non-DMPI building occupants.
- Provide procurement activities for the Genomics labs, IT, and others within DMPI, as needed.
- Reconcile supply spending on grants, when needed.
- Assists with the development of annual pricing for the Molecular Genomics Core budget.
- Assists with FAM process by performing monthly management oversight reviews and performing an annual review of all standing PO’s for DMPI.
Lab Operations (primarily Genomics group): 35%
- Lab Safety Coordinator for Genomics group: develops, implements, and enforces laboratory safety policies and procedures.
- Develops, composes, and revises Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and performs annual reviews and updates of SOPs for Genomics group.
- Lab Chemical Hygiene Officer: maintains training records, good work practices, chemical inventory, chemical and biological safety, and SDSs for Genomics group.
- Maintenance of common equipment by cleaning, repairing, or arranging repairs via 3rd parties for Genomics group.
- Thawing and cleaning freezers, refrigerators, and cold rooms, maintaining pipettes, maintaining and testing Sensaphone alarm systems, disposing of chemical waste, etc.for Genomics group.
- Coordinates set up and installation of new lab equipment for Genomics group.
- Coordinates lab moves and equipment rearranging for DMPI.
- Coordinates with research staff on issues that impact laboratory operations for DMPI.
- Represents DMPI in serving on SOM committees involved in the development of new University-wide tools, in areas pertaining to lab operations and procurement.
- Maintains MGC equipment by scheduling preventative maintenances and repairs.
- Tracks usage of MGC equipment.
Facilities Management 35%
- Assists with facilities management of the Carmichael building, working closely with the facility manager and serving as the primary backup.
- Identifies and troubleshoots building-related issues in the lab space, bringing issues to the attention of the Administrative Director, such as needed building renovations, compliance issues, etc.
- Maintain service contracts on common building equipment and ensure that maintenance is performed, and invoices are paid.
- Maintains quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and insures maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices.
- Primary management of both freezer farms, containing space for up to 102 freezers.
- Helps incoming and outgoing faculty to set up or close down their labs.
- Assists with audits on space and asset tracking.
- Assists with surplus equipment disposal
Training (primarily Genomics group): 5%
- Assures that laboratory personnel are trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and laboratory safety.
- Training personnel on the Sensaphone alarm systems and pager.
- Assists employees at DMPI with the setup of and training on Buy@Duke, as needed.
Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.

Requires Bachelor degree in related field.
