Our unique character - shaped by outstanding academics, facilities and community life - promotes extraordinary student success.

Beyond their talent, these classmates share a desire to shape the future through technology, insight, intellectual exploration and community service.
Job Description:
Binghamton University's Cinema Department develops artists and creative thinkers who are willing to explore experimental modalities of practice. A strong history of underground and independent production has made our trailblazing department an antidote to the Hollywood industry model.
We seek applicants for a tenure-track position in film studies with specialization in cinema histories, and theories of media, and/or moving image art. The ideal candidate will have a research and teaching concentration that addresses cinema through a global approach to theories and practices of the moving image. We especially welcome candidates whose work demonstrates expertise in one or more of the following areas: race and ethnicity; transnationality; diasporic and/or hemispheric contexts and cultures; the internationalization of cultural forms and publics; circulation and migration; colonialism, decolonization, and postcolonialism; and networks of global exchange.
This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment in our film studies stream at the rank of assistant professor with a 2/2 teaching load. The successful candidate will maintain an active scholarly practice and will also contribute to the department via service, including committee work, independent studies, thesis advising, curricular development, etc. We started an MFA in Cinema Program in Fall 2023, and the successful applicant will work together with the faculty, staff, and students to shape this new program.
We are committed to offering an enriching educational environment that is inclusive of all of its constituents and that fosters a diverse, multi-vocal, connected community. We recognize that the field of cinema does not reflect the diversity of the population that it serves. We invite applications from colleagues who share in our commitment to a more inclusive discipline, through research and teaching.
This position is part of Binghamton's multiyear cluster hire initiative in Arts Practice, Performance and Research in the 21st Century.
Requirements:
Preferred applicants will hold a PhD in film studies (by August 18, 2025) but candidates with a strong research profile in film studies from a related field will also be given consideration. Teaching experience at the college level is required.

Working at Binghamton University
Message on working at Binghamton University from President Harvey Stenger
History
Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.
Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.
In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.
In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
