Overview:
Responsible for the quality and efficiency of the underwriting of commercial loan analyses with multiple commercial underwriting teams for assigned segment. On a daily basis, interacts with senior management of the Credit, Business Banking and Commercial Banking Divisions regarding the approval and underwriting of major commercial loan requests.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead team that partners proactively with the sales and monitoring teams and is intimately involved throughout the deal process, from deal screen through approval, making recommendations on appropriate credit structures, etc. Ensures that analyses provide an independent credit quality assessment of the Bank's largest commercial clients identifying credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, and other pertinent credit issues. These assessments include initial analyses of new money and material modifications
Responsible for the quality, efficiency and timeliness of the underwriting of commercial loans for multiple underwriting teams, including review of deal structures, approval of term sheets and loan approvals according to credit policy and Bank procedures.
Provides guidance, support, and leadership with regard to more complex credit relationships, as well as fostering partnership between underwriters, monitoring team and relationship managers.
Meet with bank clients and prospects as appropriate.
Partner with and act as liaison between Credit Underwriting, Credit Monitoring, the sales team and 2nd line credit functions.
Foster a collaborative team culture and provide direction on training and employee development initiatives.
Proactively manages the deployment and utilization of underwriters across the teams. Prioritizes and monitors work flow.
Responsible for adhering to and advising teams on credit policy.
Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.
Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities:
This position is expected to be an expert in commercial credit analysis/underwriting and must have a thorough level of expertise in the commercial credit policy and credit culture of M&T Bank. This position will play a substantial role in the movement of commercial loan requests through the approval process. This will, in turn, allow the Bank to meet its loan growth objectives and support our customers without sacrificing the Bank’s conservative underwriting standards.
This position will provide a more efficient operating environment within Credit.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position will have 3+ manager level direct reports and up to 40 indirect.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelors degree and 10 years relevant experience with 3 years managerial experience, or in lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 14 years education and relevant experience with 3 years of managerial experience

MBA/Advanced Degree
