Senior Cloud Database Engineer

This position is a hybrid role requiring employees to work from our headquarters location in Seattle, WA every Tuesday and Wednesday, and remote all other days.

The Role:

 

The Senior Cloud Database Engineer is an integral part of the Production Engineering team which is responsible for the foundation that empowers Redfin (network, storage, database, compute). Redfin recently completed the tremendous change of moving from on-prem to 100% in AWS cloud. The Senior Cloud Database Engineer will play a critical role in supporting this transformation for the databases that support all of Redfin’s sites and apps.  This role requires depth in design, collaboration with internal teams, a proactive approach to problem solving, and an ability to optimize and tune our databases for maximum efficiency.

 

 

Who You Are:

• You have expertise and development skills in building, scaling, and supporting database technologies  (Postgres, Aurora  RDS,  event streaming, caching).

• You have formulated and led cloud database deliverables including provisioning, automation, scaling/performance, and replication.

• You understand the what/why/how of infrastructure protocols and architecture.

• You have experience with database performance tuning, troubleshooting databases, and performance issues.

• You love to build tooling for common DBA processes and to automate!

 

Responsibilities:

• You will define & implement database architecture with a focus on reliability, throughput, scalability, and security.

• You will build observability to proactively detect and prevent performance issues.

• You will perform DBA duties in non-production and production environments, such as upgrade, backup, recovery, and migration.

• You will maintain configuration of Postgres instances including replication setup, parameter settings, and identification of appropriate instance types/sizes.

• You will plan / participate in high availability and disaster recovery planning/drills.

• You will identify valuable data and work with the business & application teams to guide them on their cloud journeys.

• You will use your systems knowledge to increase scaling and performance for every service at Redfin.

• You will participate in an on-call rotation.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

• 5+  years of cloud / AWS experience with at least 3+ years of that managing a cloud database instance (i.e. RDS, Aurora, or on EC2)

• 5+ years of PostgreSQL (or similar) database engineering and administration. 

• Shell scripting and Python/Ruby script development.

• Experience in an Agile environment and production infrastructure on call.

• Understanding of operating systems, storage and networking.

• Understanding of continuous delivery and deployment.

• Experience with Linux administration and Linux scripting.

 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

• AWS Certified Database - Specialty

• Software or Systems Development experience.

• Expertise in RDS (Postgres) databases and Non-Relational databases such as (Redis, Snowflake).

The compensation information is provided in compliance with job posting disclosure requirements in Hawaii, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, California and Washington, DC.

 

Base Pay Range: $127,400.00 - 174,800.00. Actual base pay will depend on varying circumstances, including the position, location, individual qualifications, market finances, and other operational business needs. Depending on the position, compensation may also include commissions, bonuses, and equity. Potential for quarterly bonuses based on company performance. Potential for merit increases and stock grants based on performance.
